As an activity of mind, Take Up the Bodies is an extension of Herbert Blau's own years of experiment with the theater group KRAKEN, which followed upon a distinguished and controversial career with the Actor's Workshop of San Francisco, the Repertory Theater of Lincoln Center, and the Disney-backed California Institute of the Arts. The book is a meditation , deeply rooted in these experiences, on "the dynamics of disappearance," from which it derives a theory of theater.
Winner of the 1984 George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism
