Celebrating the Voice in Performance

The primary aim of Voice International is to restore the vital role of vocal expression and creativity within the performing arts and within community life in Wales. The enterprise consolidates and develops a wide range of voice initiatives originated by the Centre for Performance Research (CPR) over the past twenty five years. Through a range of activities, organised at a number of levels, practical and theoretical, for professionals and amateur performers, individuals as well as the community, Voice International will extend opportunities for all to participate in explorations and projects that enhance and underline the significance of the expressive voice in creative life.

A major focus of work to date has been the internationally renowned Giving Voice festival, now about to present its ninth edition. The festival is but one chord in a possible six-chord harmonic of linked Voice International activities:

· The Voice in Common – a three-part community programme to develop a network of community choirs in Wales, offer accessible workshops in speaking and singing and produce community music-theatre productions

· Giving Voice Festival – themed editions of the 10 day biennial international festival

· The Voice Works – a series of professional development opportunities, including workshops, practical explorations, productions and performances

· The Voice Laboratory – an ongoing programme of research and experimentation working with significant voice artists

· The Digital Voice Box – the cataloguing and housing of the ‘voice in performance’ archive

· The Voice Print – the publishing and dissemination of information, specialised books, manuals and articles
